Agriculture and Food Security

Understanding the Thematic Area: This thematic area tackles issues of agricultural development, rural livelihoods, and household and national food security. Given the importance of agriculture in Africa regarding its contribution to economic growth, poverty reduction, and national exports, this is a very important thematic area. RuralNet has a long and distinguished background in this area, and other thematic areas have evolved from it. Sub-themes include agricultural production and productivity, agricultural markets and value chains, agribusiness development, non-farm rural livelihoods, agricultural policies, rural finance and institutions, and capacity development. As hinted at above, these themes are connected to other areas. Therefore, an integrated approach that mainstreams key issues—such as natural resource management, climate change, gender, and human development—is key to a comprehensive treatment of this area.

Coverage: The many activities RuralNet undertakes under this thematic area can be grouped into three broad areas:

  1. Programme design: RuralNet has helped to design many agricultural projects and programmes in Africa.

  2. Project and programme implementation: This has been the case since 2003, with RuralNet mobilizing personnel to implement particular aspects of projects to help small farmers raise productivity and link them to markets.

  3. Evaluations and special studies: RuralNet’s special understanding of rural livelihoods is widely sought after in evaluation, lesson learning, and special studies assignments across Africa.

Qualifications of Consultants: Consultants under this thematic area have wide-ranging experience in agricultural development and food security issues and understand small- and medium-scale farming systems and their linkage to national and global developments.
