Understanding the Theme: This entails treating sustainable management of natural resources as the basis to achieve sustainable development in terms of poverty reduction, improved equity, and resource conservation. The sustainable management of forestry, land, and water resources often means addressing complex institutional, social, economic, and ecological factors. Due to the challenges associated with climate change and the need for adaptation to these challenges, the links between natural resources management, poverty, and governance have been accentuated, and the need for building capacities for resilience and disaster preparedness has increased in recent years.
Coverage: This thematic area addresses several issues, including: (i) Land tenure systems; (ii) land information systems and GIS; (iii) natural resource inventories; (iv) natural resource use planning; (v) natural resource legal frameworks; (vi) adaptive governance systems and community participation for natural resource management; (vii) capacity development; (viii) vulnerability assessments for climate change; (ix) adaptive capacity for climate change; and (x) design of projects and programmes for climate change adaptation.
Qualifications of Consultants: The consultants are natural resource management specialists from both the social and natural sciences who bring a minimum of ten years of post-qualification experience in resource management and environmental assessments. They possess extensive experience in conducting environmental impact assessments, designing conservation strategies, and implementing climate change adaptation measures. Furthermore, they demonstrate a deep understanding of the nexus between development and natural resources, alongside a proven track record of mobilizing communities within conservation programs.
